Small Caravans and Mini Caravans: The Real Advantages for Manoeuvring and Storage

Blue teardrop mini caravan and a car with a roof box on a snowy field under a blue sky with clouds

Not so long ago, the campsites on the Valencian coast were almost all six- or seven-metre caravans with their canvas awnings. Today it is hard to walk round any pitch area without spotting a teardrop or a mini caravan barely three metres long hitched to a small car. The reason is clear: lots of people want to travel with their home in tow without wrestling a huge trailer round every roundabout. We look at the advantages they really offer, from manoeuvring to where to store them.

What is a mini caravan, and why do newcomers to caravanning like them so much?

A mini caravan is simply a compact caravan, considerably shorter and lighter than a conventional model. It has found its audience among people who want to go caravanning without dealing with two tonnes behind the car. More agile and cheaper? Yes, and easier to live with day to day.

Differences between a small, a compact and a large caravan

A small caravan weighs little and measures little: it is designed for a couple or a small family. A compact one makes better use of the interior, with beds that convert into a dinette and lockers even under the seats, while barely growing on the outside. A large one gains in space and comforts at the cost of being less nimble on the road and harder to tow.

Types of mini caravan: teardrop, convertible and camper

The teardrop is the most recognisable, with its teardrop profile, featherweight build and a kitchen that opens up under the rear hatch. Convertibles change their layout to suit the moment: table and benches by day, bed by night. Then there are camper-style models, a small home on wheels in a reduced size, popular with people who want a bit more headroom to stand up.

How many people is a mini caravan designed for? Can it sleep four?

It depends on the model. Pure teardrops are for two, and only just. Other mini caravans do sleep up to four thanks to fold-down bunks or a dinette that converts into a double bed, and in those cases the challenge is storage: every nook counts. With two small children, a weekend works. For the whole of August, in our view, it falls short.

Advantages of mini caravans over a large caravan

The advantages range from what you notice behind the wheel to what you notice in your wallet.

Manoeuvrability: the big selling point of a compact caravan

It is the first thing people mention when they switch from a large caravan to a small one. The narrow streets of an inland village, the curved entrance to a campsite, a supermarket car park: with three or four metres of trailer everything becomes simpler and a good deal safer. Reversing stops being an ordeal.

Aerodynamics and lower fuel consumption when towing

A teardrop barely sticks up above the car's roof, so the air flows round it with hardly any drag. That means less fuel per kilometre. With a tall 2.5-metre caravan, a diesel car's consumption easily rises by three or four litres per hundred kilometres, whereas with a mini caravan the difference is much smaller.

Can you keep a mini caravan at home or in your garage?

Sometimes, yes. A teardrop 1.5 metres high fits in some private garages or a back yard, and that is one of its selling points. The reality is less rosy for many owners: the door of a shared residential garage rarely goes above 2 metres, the residents' association raises objections, and a city flat has no yard. For those cases there is storage in a secure compound such as our caravan storage in Silla, where a mini caravan takes up little room and can be moved by hand on its jockey wheel.

Why choose a caravan under 750 kg?

A lightweight caravan simplifies the paperwork and asks very little of the car towing it.

Which licence you need to tow a 750 kg caravan

In Spain, a caravan with a MAM (maximum authorised mass) of 750 kg or less can be towed on an ordinary carnet B (the standard Spanish/EU category B car licence), with no need for B96 or B+E. That explains much of its success among people who have never towed a trailer before. We go into detail in what you can tow under 750 kg without upgrading your licence.

Legal and insurance advantages below 750 kg

Light trailers come under a simpler regime. As a rule they do not need a periodic ITV (Spain's MOT), and third-party liability is covered by the insurance of the vehicle towing them, although it is worth confirming with your insurer before your first trip. Less paperwork. Lower fixed costs every year.

Comparison: a caravan under 750 kg versus large motorhomes

Compared with a seven-metre motorhome, a lightweight caravan wins on manoeuvrability, fuel consumption and ease of storage, and its upkeep costs far less. The large motorhome offers more independence and more comfort on board; nobody disputes that. If you are still deciding, it is worth reading about the differences between a caravan and a motorhome before you buy.

Do mini caravans have what you need for short breaks and camping?

For the basics, yes. Do not expect the lounge of a twin-axle caravan, but you will not be roughing it either.

Interior equipment: kitchen, bed and bathroom in a small space

You will usually find a simple one- or two-burner hob, a double bed and, in quite a few models, a minimal washroom with a chemical toilet. Teardrops tend to do without the washroom and put the kitchen outside, under the hatch. For a good night's sleep and a hot dinner, it is more than enough.

Mini caravans or motorhomes: which is more comfortable?

For interior space, the motorhome wins. But a mini caravan can be towed by any car and uses less fuel, and when you reach the campsite you unhitch and have your car free. And if a van is what tempts you, read our comparison of a caravan and a campervan.

Trip ideas with a small caravan

From Valencia, a weekend in the Serranía or the Rincón de Ademuz, where the approach roads to some campsites get quite narrow. Or the coast at Dénia out of season. With a short trailer you can reach places a seven-metre caravan would not even attempt.

How to choose well when buying a small caravan

Price matters. So do the type of model, the equipment and, if it is second-hand, how the previous owner looked after it.

Budget: a new or second-hand mini caravan

The price range is wide and depends mainly on whether it is new or used and on the type. Set a maximum budget before you start browsing adverts, because without that limit it is very easy to fall for a model you cannot afford.

What to check before buying a compact caravan

The chassis and underside, looking for rust or knocks. The electrics, plugging into 220 V and testing every light. The plumbing, with the tank full to see whether it drips. And damp in the corners and roof seals, which in a second-hand caravan is the most expensive defect to fix.

Advantages of travelling in a mini caravan over other types of caravan

Easier driving, less spent on diesel and access to destinations a long trailer cannot reach. For couples who go away often, honestly, it offers the best balance between what it gives and what it asks of you.

What does a mini caravan bring to everyday life?

Some people have made it their usual way of travelling.

Parking and manoeuvring in town and on campsites

Parking it without breaking a sweat, whether on a street or on a pitch, is probably what owners appreciate most in day-to-day use. When you get home the advantage is still there: at a facility like ours, with 24-hour access and no slopes, you can leave it in its gravel space in a couple of minutes.

Savings on fuel and maintenance

It uses less fuel when towing and is cheaper to maintain. Over five or six years, the difference from a large caravan adds up.

The mini caravan as a way of life within caravanning

For many enthusiasts it is no longer a stepping stone to something bigger but exactly what they want: setting off on a Friday with no preparation, reaching small places and not depending on anyone to park. If you are looking for more ideas or tips, you will find other articles on our blog.
